Okpa an unforgettable morning delight in Enugu State.

Bambara Nut popularly known as Okpa is a traditional Nigerian snack made from Bambara nut flour which has turned into house hold  meal.

In Enugu State Okpa is specifically prepared for breakfast .

Seen differently as  snack or full meal by people Okpa is a tasty treat, with protein, fiber,calcium, phosphorus and vitamins, making it a nutritious start for the day.

There is hardly any  community in Enugu State without spots  where Okpa is sold.

Initially regarded as food for the poor Okpa today has assumed a higher status with the rich and the poor having it listed on their morning menu.

Aside this , other Nigerians and foreigners who reside in Enugu State have also joined in the daily demand for Okpa.

A testament to the growing popularity of Okpa is the fact that it’s consumption as a morning delicacy has shifted to its being enjoyed at any time of the day with  soft drinks to wash it down.

The  delightful snack is prepared with  palm oil, pepper and local seasoning known as uzuza in Igbo language. 

Traditional Okpa mixture  is wrapped in  dry banana leaves before cooking giving it a special aroma as it is being unwrapped.

However in  the present days some people use nylon to wrap the mixture before cooking it.

The cooking which normally lasts above thirty minutes turn the mixture into a solid but soft form ready for consumption.

Many lovers of the proteinous snack enjoy eating it hot.

This account for the usual echo of “Okpa di Oku” , literally translated Hot Okpa by its  vendors in motor parks, markets , schools or other public places.

One can grab Okpa in any of these places while steaming hot unwrap and eat on the go. No plates, no fuss.

In fact, Okpa has become such an iconic part of Enugu’s cuisine and culture  that it is being celebrated as a symbol of pride and identity by the people.

Apart from being eaten privately, it is also served at social gatherings, festivals, and even conferences, showcasing the state’s rich culinary heritage.

The affordability of Okpa  makes an easy choice for students, workers, and travelers.

 It’s low glycemic index makes it a good choice for people with diabetes, and its high protein content appeals to vegetarians and vegans.

Some okpa sellers  said the business has gone a long way in solving financial problems in their families. One of them, Mrs Chinedu Eze explained that she has been in the business for thirteen years with many customers.

Another seller, Mrs Ogechukwu Ezea who has been in the business for fifteen years said she had achieved a lot with the business   including building a four Bedroom Bungalow.

Some people who enjoy eating Okpa Ekenedirichukwu Mamah, Friday Igwechi and Uchenna Asadu said that it is  better eaten in the morning because it  energises them to engage in their daily activities .

A student of University of Nigeria Nsukka, Chidera Ignis said she prefers eating okpa in the morning because it is the fastest food she can grab before attending lectures.

Also a parent Mrs Ifeoma Ozioko, observed that okpa   can be easily bought for children as breakfast meal before they are taken to school.

In Enugu State Okpa is not just food or snack State. It is a morning ritual, a cultural marker, and a survival staple rolled into one.
