Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, says that his administration is repositioning the state as a major destination for investment, business, tourism and living. Governor Mbah stated this during the maiden international flight of Enugu Air from Enugu to Douala, Cameroon, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
Governor Mbah said that Enugu Air, launched about fourteen months ago amid skepticism, obtained its Air Operator Certificate within six months and has continued to expand. He explained that the airline is part of a broader plan to restore Enugu’s position as a major economic and administrative hub, stressing that efficient air, road and rail connectivity is critical to sustainable economic growth.
The Governor expressed optimism that Enugu Air would soon expand to other African cities and beyond, while announcing plans for passenger loyalty programmes. He also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Aviation and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority for their support and regulatory guidance.
The Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Chris Najomo, represented by Mrs. Onyeka Udenze, described the new international route as a significant milestone for Nigeria’s aviation sector. He said that it would strengthen regional integration, promote trade and create opportunities for businesses, while urging Enugu Air to maintain strict safety, security and operational standards. The airline’s Managing Director, Captain Tolu Ita, explained that the flight marks a new chapter in connecting people, markets and businesses across borders.
Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service, Mr. Ekene Nnamani, pointed out that the expansion of Enugu Air would contribute to the state’s revenue growth and economic diversification.
He emphasized that the government was exploring revenue opportunities through public assets, improved land administration and CNG-powered buses, while assuring that increased revenue would be channelled into development.
