The House of Representatives hopeful for Nsukka-Igbo Eze South Federal Constituency on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for renewed commitment to democratic values, responsible governance, and leadership accountability as critical pillars for Nigeria’s progress.
Dr. Onyishi, popularly known as Ikemba, made the call while speaking during a radio interview on Voice FM 96.7, Nsukka, where he shared his views on governance, national development, and the role of public leadership in strengthening democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on the state of governance in the country, Onyishi stressed that accountability, transparency, integrity, and commitment to service remain fundamental principles that should guide leadership at all levels. According to him, strengthening these values is essential for sustaining public trust and deepening democratic practice.
He observed that public confidence in democratic institutions is strengthened when elected leaders consistently act in ways that reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people they serve, noting that leadership must remain people-centered and guided by responsibility.
“Public leadership thrives when it is built on accountability, decency, honesty, and commitment to service. These values remain fundamental to sustainable democratic growth,” he said.
On the nation’s development trajectory, Onyishi stated that solving Nigeria’s economic and social challenges requires thoughtful planning, innovation-driven policies, and a clear understanding of the realities confronting the country.
“You cannot effectively solve challenges without first understanding them. As a nation, there is a need for greater strategic thinking and policies that position us competitively within the global community,” he stated.
He further noted that countries that have made remarkable economic progress have done so through innovation, strategic planning, and deliberate investment in human capital, adding that Nigeria possesses the natural resources and talent required to achieve similar success.
According to him, Nigeria’s abundant natural endowment, favorable climate, and energetic population place the country in a strong position to achieve significant growth if properly harnessed.
“There is immense potential in Nigeria. What is required is strategic planning, innovation, and collective determination to maximize our opportunities and strengthen our place in the global economy,” he added.
He noted that several communities continue to experience developmental concerns such as inadequate healthcare services, unstable electricity supply, limited access to potable water, and poor road infrastructure, stressing that effective representation should focus on practical solutions to improve living standards.
“I appreciate everyone who has supported me and I encourage continued engagement from all stakeholders. Leadership should always be about service and commitment to improving the lives of the people,” he said.
He added that quality representation requires leaders who remain attentive to the aspirations of the people while pursuing policies that create opportunities and improve social conditions.
On youth development and employment, Onyishi expressed concern over the challenges many graduates face in securing opportunities aligned with their skills and qualifications, calling for policies that encourage entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation, particularly within technical and engineering sectors.
He also urged members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and Nigerians generally to remain committed to constructive engagement and collective efforts aimed at strengthening the economy and improving national development.
