Enugu State Government Urges Residents to Clear Drains to avoid Flood Risks

The Enugu State Government has urged residents to adopt preventive measures against flooding as rainfall intensifies across the state.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the government called on residents to support ongoing efforts to minimise the impact of seasonal flooding by maintaining clean surroundings and ensuring that drainage systems remain free of obstructions.

The statement warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels and waterways could worsen flood incidents and endanger lives and property.

The statement advised residents against disposing of refuse into gutters, drainage channels, streams and rivers, stressing that such practices impede the free flow of water and contribute to avoidable flooding.

“We therefore urge everyone to take the necessary precautions to protect lives, property, and the environment,” the statement said.

The government appealed to households, landlords, business owners and community leaders to keep their environments clean and ensure that drainage channels and waterways within their neighbourhoods remain unobstructed.

It also advised residents living in flood-prone communities to monitor weather advisories closely and be prepared to relocate to safer locations whenever necessary.

The statement cautioned members of the public against walking, swimming or driving through floodwaters, noting that the depth and strength of floodwaters could be difficult to determine and may pose serious danger.

“Flood prevention is a collective responsibility.

According to the statement, by keeping the environment clean and the drainage systems unobstructed, it can significantly reduce the risk of flooding and safeguard the communities.
