World Breastfeeding Week: Health Expert Urges Exclusive Breastfeeding for Healthy Child Development

.

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week, a health practitioner, Mrs. Amarachi Ewulike, has advised nursing mothers to make exclusive breastfeeding a priority for the healthy growth and development of their infants.

Mrs. Ewulike gave the advice in an interview with Radio Nigeria Correspondent, Rita Onyekwe, while highlighting the benefits of breastfeeding.

She explained that breast milk is a natural and complete source of nutrition, containing all the essential nutrients a baby’s body and brain need for healthy growth and proper development.

According to her, breastfeeding also strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child.

Mrs. Ewulike enumerated some of the benefits of breastfeeding to include boosting a child’s immunity, enhancing brain development, cost effectiveness and supporting child spacing

Some exclusive breastfeeding mothers who shared their experiences described the journey as rewarding despite its challenges.
They said exclusive breastfeeding has helped improve their babies’ health and strengthen the bond with their children.

World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from the 1st to the 7th of August to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and encourage support for nursing mothers.

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”
