Workers in Enugu State joined their counterparts worldwide to mark this year’s Workers’ Day with a colourful gathering at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, where demand for government attention to pressing labour concerns took the centre stage

The event also provided opportunity for workers to reflect on their contributions to the state’s economic growth and social stability.

Addressing the workers, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress Enugu State Council, Comrade Fabian Nwigbo, and his Trade Union Congress counterpart, Comrade Ejike Akaeme, emphasized, the urgent need for enhanced workers welfare package including payment of thirty-two thousand naira minimum pension to all retirees and long awaited arrears of gratuity approved since the beginning of the year, as well as payment of consequential adjustment to workers of the state.

The Labour Leaders further encouragedworkers to reciprocate government’s good gestures to their welfare by being committed to duties,

They appreciated Governor Peter Mbah for the speedy way he is transforming the state into a modern city and his prudence in managing the affairs and resources of the state.

Governor Peter Mbah, who was represented by his Deputy Mr. Ifeanyi Ossai, expressed the administration’s appreciation to the workers for their resilience and dedication despite the prevailing economic pressures.

The Governor assured that the government was committed to policies that would protect workers and improve their standard of living.

Governor Mbah outlined several steps taken by his government to address these issues, including ongoing efforts to strengthen public sector reforms, enhance capacity building, and promotion of job creation through investment-friendly policies.

Correspondent reports that there was a shared sense of optimism that continued dialogue, mutual understanding, and deliberate policy actions would lead to improved welfare, economic stability, and a more secure future for workers across the state.
