The Enugu state Governor, Fr. Peter Mbah has approved an additional one hundred and fifteen million naira monthly subvention for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, ESUT, bringing the state government’s monthly support to the institution from one hundred and sixty-one to two hundred and seventy-six million naira.
The latest intervention brings the cumulative increase in ESUT’s monthly subvention to one hundred and forty million naira since February 2026.
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, SSG Professor Chidiebere Onyia, who announced this in a statement, said that the increased funding was aimed at strengthening ESUT’s capacity to meet its financial obligations, particularly staff welfare and the provision of quality academic services.
Professor Onyia explained that before February this year, the state government provided one hundred and thirty-six million naira monthly to ESUT, but increased the amount by twenty- five million to support the College of Medicine and the payment of one hundred and twenty additional staff.
He said that the latest one hundred and fifteen million naira increase would further assist the university in meeting the salary agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.
The SSG appealed to ASUU, ESUT chapter to reciprocate the government’s intervention by suspending its industrial action and resume academic activities, while outstanding issues are resolved through constructive dialogue.
He stressed that students should not bear the consequences of disputes that could be resolved amicably.
Professor Onyia reaffirmed Governor Mbah’s commitment to workers’ welfare and the development of ESUT, assuring that the state government would continue to support the university within available resources.
He urged the university management and ASUU to collaborate in ensuring an uninterrupted academic calendar and quality education for students.
