The National Population Commission says it has commenced the Nationwide Full Digital Birth and Death Registration.
The Chairman of the Commission Dr. Aminu Yusuf announced this while briefing newsmen in Abuja.
Dr. Yusuf explained that the exercise was aimed at strengthening civil registration, enhancing the generation of vital statistics, and ensuring that every birth and death occurring in Nigeria is captured through a modern, efficient, and digitally enabled registration system.
The Chairman described the move as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system.
He stated that the digital birth and death registration which took effect from 1st July 2026, is now operational across the thirty-six States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the chairman, the initiative builds on the historic launch of the E-CRVS System and the inauguration of the National Coordination Committee on CRVS by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on 8th November 2023.
Dr. Yusuf while regretting that millions of births and deaths go unregistered in the country , pointed out that NPC has established four thousand and eleven functional registration centres across the seven hundred and seventy four Local Government Areas and is working to expand this network to about eight thousand.
