The Enugu State Government has alleged a plot by some opposition elements to import armed thugs and bandits into the state to create panic ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, made the allegation while addressing a press conference in Enugu on Saturday’s incidents involving the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat.
Professor Onyia denied government involvement in the incidents, saying that the airport confrontation arose from the party’s alleged attempt to hold a campaign rally without approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN. He said that police were investigating the shooting at the party secretariat, where one person reportedly sustained gunshot injuries.
The SSG also denied allegations that the governor’s Chief Security Officer was involved in the shooting, maintaining that the official was with Governor Peter Mbah at a rally when the incident occurred. He urged political parties to embrace peaceful, issue-based campaigns and avoid actions capable of threatening public order.
Professor Onyia stressed that the state government’s investments in security were aimed at sustaining peace and creating an environment conducive to business and investment. He also expressed confidence that Governor Mbah would secure re-election in 2027 based on his administration’s performance.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protect the democratic rights of residents to campaign and vote freely, while urging political actors to respect the law and ensure peaceful conduct ahead of the elections.
