Enugu State Government has secured a 200-million-dollar investment for a 100-megawatt solar power project aimed at boosting electricity supply and reducing power challenges confronting residents and businesses in the state.
Governor Peter Mbah announced this when he received a delegation from a notable indigenous electric power company, led by its Managing Director, Mr. Edwin Enwegbara, at the Government House, Enugu.
He stressed that the project would deliver electricity at affordable tariffs and within the shortest possible time.
Governor Mbah said that the state’s interest was beyond attracting investments, stressing that the ultimate goal is to ensure reliable and affordable electricity for residents and businesses.
He directed a review of the proposed tariff and financial model for the project to ensure that while investors recover their costs, consumers also benefit from competitive electricity prices.
The Governor also called for a shorter implementation timeline, and pledged government’s support in removing bureaucratic and institutional bottlenecks that could delay the project.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of the power company, Mr. Edwin Enwegbara, said that the proposed programme would deploy distributed solar generation with battery storage, while the final tariff would be determined in collaboration with relevant electricity regulators.
The development comes amid ongoing reforms in Enugu’s electricity sector aimed at creating a competitive intrastate electricity market and attracting further private investment.
